Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods (Final Cut)

I picked up the "Final Cut" version of the Stargate SG-1 pilot episode 'Children of the Gods' this morning. Brad Wright (on of the two main show-runners) decided, after 12 years, that he wasn't happy with the original pilot episode and wanted to go back and "redo" it. There are scenes added, some deleted and some entirely new (and updated) special effects.

I like the new version better. The biggest difference to me was Christopher Judge re-voicing his entire part and the added scenes with him. Especially the conversation with Sam after they broke out of the prison.

The final 30 minutes are 10x better now, especially visually. I always thought the scene where Teal'C stops, throws the staff weapon to O'Neill and then turns back was over-the-top because the other Jaffa were just standing there the whole time! It's still not perfect but it felt like they didn't waste any time to fire back. The action in that whole scene had a lot more life.

The gliders at the end were better too.

And of course getting rid of that ridiculous reproductive organs line alone made the whole thing worth it. Actually most of that scene is gone and the updated version really makes Carter look a lot stronger and less defensive.

Stargate Continuum Trailer

I just saw this on GateWorld. I wasn't really looking forward to this Stargate movie as much as 'Ark of Truth' but the long I have to wait, the more impatient I get, I find myself getting more and more excited about it.

The trailer doesn't really show much. Most of what is shown passes by before you get a chance to take it in. There's several shots of Gua'uld Ha'tak Vessels (Motherships) and at least one Al'Kesh (Mid-range bomber) I'm sure there's probably some Tel'Taks (Gua'uld crargo ships - Althought I don't know what use they'd be) and some DeathGliders (Gua'uld Fighters). It's almost ominous to thing there aren't any Tau'Ri (Earth) ships. No 302s or any sign of the Odyssey, or the Deadalus or Apollo for that matter.

There's a shot of Ba'al talking to O'Niell (2 Ls) a few shots of fighter jets and a shot of Teal'C sporting the Jaffa armor (that may be a lot different than the normal armor he wore in the series) as he fires a staff weapon.

It may be just a teaser trailer but it's still pretty damn exciting. Especially for somebody like me that watches his seasons 1-10 DvDs all the f*cking time. Hopefully they'll have some longer trailers to show in the next month or so before the straight to DvD movie is released on July 29. In the meantime, go check out Gateworld.com, and make sure you check the forums area. I'm there a lot posting as ShanBruceLee (for obvious reasons...)

Stargate - The Ark of Truth

I bought 'Stargate - The Ark of Truth' on DvD yesterday. I've watched it 4 times already. It's that good.

As much as I love watching superhero/comic book movies or Martial Art/Kung Fu flicks, There's nothing better than a good SciFi/Space adventure and Ark of Truth is the best one I've seen since Revenge of the Sith.

If you've ever watched the Stargate SG-1 tv series you know the scope of the show is damn near cinamatic already. The special effects are probably the best on tv in any genre. In Ark of Truth they took that to another level. Seeing the Oddessy going through the "Super gate" was amazing and exciting.

Speaking of the Oddessy, there's no real space battle. That's one of the few negatives about the movie. Sure there's a battle between the Oddessy and 4 Ori ships (A one-sided battle) But aside from that there's nothing.

The main focus of the movie is split between Carter, Mitchell and the crew of the Oddessy battling with the replicators inside the Oddessy and the ground based adventures of Jackson, Teal'C, Vala and Tomin (Who kinda takes on the mantle of the sixth team member in the film) It's exciting and does a great job of keeping your attention - even through the 4th viewing.

Adria returns as the main villain. A role she played throughout the final 2 seasons of the series. And she's evil! A perfect kind of evil. She doesn't waste time trying to convince the good guys that they're wrong as much as she did in the tv series. She's pretty straight to the point.

One of the most centric elements of the tv series were the "Ancients." The Ancients, also known as the Alterrans, were the first evolution of Humans (we being the second) in the universe. They were the original builders of the Stargates. The movie deals heavily with the story of the Alterrans/Ori and gives us a great resolution to what can only be described as the most epic good vs evil battle in the entire universe (the Stargate universe anyway)
We also learn a lot about their background as well as answers to some questions left by the tv series about their evil counterparts, the Ori.

There's also a lot of little things thrown in that seem to be done specifically as a nod to the fans of both (SG-1 and Atlantis) shows. Walter, Reynolds, Ellis all make cameos.

The bottom line is, if you love the tv series you'll love this movie. If you love SciFi/space adventures you'll love this movie. If you love fantasy you'll love this movie. Basically, if you love movies... you'll love this movie!
