Hijos de P - A Zuda Webcomic

Hijos de P - "Ciudad P is a suburb where the country’s tradition joins its crime and corruption. Six characters will try to change their fate written with blood and bullets."

Finally, Zuda produces a decent crime story! When I started reading this story I felt like I was 15 years old, walking down the hall on my way to class when I rounded a corner and bumped into the prettiest girl in school.

The first 8 pages are nothing but a set-up for what's to come (hopefully.) It describes a crime-ridden suburb just outside of the "Capitol City" where nothing good ever happens. While all of this is being explained, we're slowly (but not too slowly) introduced to two of our new friends around whom the story revolves.

It's beautifully drawn in black and white ink with an impressive style that keeps your attention. I would've loved to see this one done in grayscale but I guess we can't always have our cake and eat it too.

Extracurricular Activities - A Zuda Webcomic

Extracurricular Activities - "In St. Francis’ Academy, a dead body has just been found in the vice principal's office. There are some who care and some who don’t. All that matters is making sure no one finds the body."

I don't have much to say about this one. The story itself wasn't great but wasn't terrible either. The same goes for the art... good but nothing special.

What I would like to talk about is that terrible synopsis

"...a dead body has just been found... ...All that matters is making sure no on finds the body."

What? Is this for real? I feel like I've just stumbled upon a dark paradox that could tear the fabric of space and time. When I read it I couldn't stop the wheels from turning and so, for your viewing pleasure, I give you 5 new short story ideas in synopsis...

"When an aging Samurai looses his family at the hands of a rival clan, he must train to become the greatest Samurai the world has ever known as he defends his family from a dangerous new clan!"

"When the colony on Mars was destroyed they had nowhere to go. Now they'll have to leave Earth all over again to explore the dangerous Solar System!"

"In a world gone mad, one man must save us all before we all go mad!"

"Samantha doesn't know where her life is supposed to go. All she knows is that the vampires are after her... now she has to get away!"

Ok, it's only 4... but seriously! You can only do so many of these before you start to feel your brain dying. So that's why I stopped at 4 (get it?)

Blood Covenant: Revelation - A Zuda Webcomic

Blood Covenant: Revelation - "4 vampires known as the Hunters seek revenge on Viktor, the one who killed their king. Viktor will not go down without a fight. Now the Hunters must face his army with an army of their own."

When I first saw this I thought "oh for fuck sake! Not another vampire story!" I mean, Vampires are the new Zombies right? But this story wasn't that bad.

The art was fantastic, especially the pencils. The colors could use a little work, mostly the shading. There are plenty of splash pages which can come in handy when your story's strong suit is the art.

The characters are ok. I loved the simple look of the Nosferatu but the main team wearing sleek black suits are so cliche it's distracting, but you can't really expect anything more from a story that's cliche from the title to the predictable twist at the end.

Overall I think it delivers enough with the art to overcome all the cliches but not enough to keep me interested in future installments. Oh, and the dialogue is aweful.

New Zuda Competition - Baby Monsters

Baby Monsters - "Shaun and Jeremiah are the first patients to successfully undergo the superhuman creation process known as anthemia. Baby Monsters follow them as their powers grow with the challenges they face."

If you don't read the synopsis before you read the comic... you may have a hard time figuring out what's going on here. That wouldn't be a problem if the synopsis weren't so general.

Judging from the technology used, the story is set in a futuristic world. I thought that was one of the more interesting aspects of the story that left me a little curious. What kind of cities do they live in? What kind of society do they come from?

The problem with this story is that it changes scenes erratically and abruptly. The transitions are choppy and leave you confused. Was he talking to this guy? Now who is this?

Overall I'd have to say it's a decent concept with poor execution and too many questions left over.

'Azure' - A Zuda Webcomic

Azure - "Earth is a watery grave for low-lying cities due to a cataclysmic event in the year 2012. What land is left has been decimated by warfare and stripped by survivors. Welcome to the world of Azure."

*MINOR SPOILERS*

Alright, so this woman lives alone in an underwater facility that's apparently controlled by a self-operating computer system that controls everything from the long range life detectors to the underwater hatch that leads out into the ocean.

Story - We don't really learn a lot in the 8-page story except that this woman lives alone in an underwater facility, she walks around in nothing but a white tank-top and panties and she has a cool armored wetsuit... Oh and there's a "mutated" shark that doesn't look anything like a mutated shark.

Art - The art is pretty impressive, especially the colors. The lighting is probably the best of any comic on Zuda. The level of detail, particularly when we see the dozens of viewscreens that line the facility, helps bring the world to life.

Overall - While the story is severley lacking, the art helps to make up for it... but it's not enough. It's possible that with a few more pages to develop the story a little more I could change my mind (and it looks like I'll get the chance because this story is currently in 1st with just under a week to go) but from the first 8 pages I'm not impressed.

'Alone' - A Zuda Webcomic

Alone - "An experimental fantasy that runs the gamut artistically, from a super-realistic painted style to impressionistic pulses of frozen emotion, as the shaman hero battles for the fate of primitive man."

*MINOR SPOILERS*

That's the tagline from the Zuda site. The actual 8-page story shows the Shaman treking through a forest in search of help. The generic part is that he's trying to "save his people." And that's about as generic as it gets.We see a decrepit female that lives below the surface of a secluded pond, a half-naked girl and a spirit that takes the form of a talking wolf. It's pretty unique for a fantasy story.

The part I liked the most about this webcomic was the art. It's done in a realistic painting style that couldn't fit the story any better. The background scenery, from the pine trees to the running water, is nearly perfect. The character expressions are a little bland but it doesn't take away from the feel of the story.

Overall it's a decent story compensated by fantastic art and interesting characters. It's a shame this comic doesn't have the support from the readers to win the monthly competition. I'd love to see at least a few more pages.

New Segment

There'll be a new segment of the blog starting either tonight or tomorrow where I'll review all of the webcomics I read, especially the Zuda contest entries.

There hasn't really been a lot to update as far as my own comics go. Partly because there's nothing new that I can discuss right now, and partly because the Clinical Assassin print hasn't been put up for sale on ComiXpress.com yet... almost 2 weeks later.

The decision to do this came to me while I was reading this month's Zuda entries so I'll probably start with those.

Football Picks Oct 4-6

Here we go again. I'll be looking to bounce back from a terrible week of picks last weekend. It's gonna be hard and I've got a few upset picks in here too.

NCAA Week 6:

Saturday:
Boston College at North Carolina State
South Carolina at Mississippi
Florida State at Miami (FL)
# 13 Auburn at # 19 Vanderbilt
#24 Connecticut at North Carolina
#23 Oregon at # 9 USC
#14 Ohio State at # 18 Wisconsin

NFL Week 5:

Sunday:
Atlanta at Green Bay
Washington at Philadelphia
Tampa Bay at Denver
Pittsburgh at Jacksonville

Monday:
Minnesota at New Orleans

(*UPDATE*)

I'm 5-2 after the college games. I guess that's not bad but the Auburn loss to Vanderbilt (commonly known as a fluke) made things a little worst. Picking Wisconsin to upset Ohio State might've been a bad pick in hindsight, but it's a bad pick I'd make again even if these two teams were playing again next Saturday.

(*UPDATE*)
I finished the week at 8-4 thanks mostly to the Eagles blowing the home field advantage and an early lead. Still not a bad week though.

Football Picks Sept 28-29

I didn't get around to this in time this week so I'm only gonna be able to pick NFL games.

NFL Week 4:

Sunday:
Green Bay at Tampa Bay
Atlanta at Carolina
Buffalo at St. Louis

Sunday Night:
Philadelphia at Chicago

Monday:
Baltimore at Pittsburgh

(*UPDATE*)
After the day games I'm 0-3. Absolutely abysmal! Even if the Eagles and Steelers both win, I'll still finish the week with a losing record for the first time this season. Maybe if I'd gotten to this in time to pick a few college games things would be different... then again, 4 of the Top 10 teams lost this week so there's no guarantee.

(*UPDATE*)
Pittsburg won so I'm not completely off this week, but I've got a lot of ground to make up next week.

Football Picks Sept 11-15 Finals

Well after going 6-0 in my college picks, the NFL picks completely ruined my record. 3 of those games were won or lost by less than a touchdown though, so it could've easily been a completely different picture.

My final score for the week is 7-4 which brings me to 12-7 on the year.

Football Picks Sept 11-15 (Update 2)

I was a perfect 6 for 6 in my college picks this week. It almost seems like I made the obvious picks in obvious lopsided contests when you look at the final scores of the UNC - Rutgers game, OSU - USC game and the Mich - ND game but if anybody says they predicted a blowout in either of those games they're probably lying.

On the other hand, the other 3 games I picked were won by just one score, and two of those were by just a field goal.

This puts me at 11-3 on the year but I'm gonna wait for the NFL picks before I update the "scoreboard" in the right sidebar. More than likely I'm gonna miss a few of those (but hopefully not!) because U just know a little more about NCAA than I do about the NFL. And let's be honest... the NCAA is by far more predictable than the NFL. I Mean how often do you have to pick a game like OSU vs USC?

Football Picks Sept 11-15

This week is a little longer because I'm picking the Thursday Night NCAA game. I'm also picking a lot more games this week than last because there's just more to pick from. Last week in the NCAA there were a lot of easy games where all the good teams scheduled soft matchups for the first few games of the season, where this week we get to see a few more interesting games.

NCAA Week 3:

Thursday:
North Carolina at Rutgers

Friday:
#13 Kansas at #19 South Florida

Saturday:
#2 Georgia at South Carolina
Michigan at Notre Dame
#10 Wisconsin at #21 Fresno State
#5 Ohio State at #1 USC

NFL Week 2:

Sunday:
New Orleans at Washington
Atlanta at Tampa Bay
New England at NY Jets
San Diego at Denver

Monday:
Philadelphia at Dallas

I'm a little reluctant to pick the Jets over the Patriots but I think the Jets, and also the Falcons, are my "upset" picks. You could easily say picking Philly over the Cowboys is an upset pick from all the predictions that the Cowboys are going to the Super Bowl this year but after Philly's performance last week I've gotta say I think they're back to the calibur team they were when they went to 3 straight NCF Championships.

I know that's contradictory to my own NFC pick (I chose the Cowboys to win the conference) but I was really impressed with last week's game.

Football Picks Sept 6-8 Final Score

I'm not happy with my results. 5-3 isn't bad but it's not great either. The damn Colts loss was a fluke but the Vikings/Packers game was another story.

I still don't think Arron Rodgers is gonna be any good this season but he did have a good game last night.

I said in the original post for this week's picks that I might have been giving the Raiders too much credit with the score I gave them... that's an understatement. They were flat out awful! And Eddie Royal (From Virginia Tech) had a great debut game for the Broncos!

I think as the season goes on I'll have a clearer picture of what's going on and my scores each week will be a little better.

Football Picks Sept 6-8

I'm gonna start doing weekly picks for some of my favorite college and NFL football games each week. I wanted to do this last week but didn't get around to it, but I'll admit that I would've picked both Virginia Tech and Clemson to win... and they both lost.

First off:
SEC - Georgia
Big 12 - Oklahoma
Big East - West Virginia
Big 10 - Ohio State
PAC 10 - USC

National Champions - USC

I'm a little reluctant to pick USC over Georgia.

NCAA Week 2:
Western Carolina 14 - Florida State 38
Miami 17 - Florida 24
Georgia Tech 14 - Boston College 17

NFL:

Super Bowl Champions - Indianapolis Colts

NFL Week 1:
Tampa Bay 10 - New Orleans 23
Jacksonville 17 - Tennessee 25
Chicago 7 - Indianapolis 28

(Monday Night Games)
Minnesota 27 - Green Bay 10
Denver 21 - Oakland 16

Not too many exciting games in college football this week... the Miami/Florida game looks like the most exciting. Just for the record - I'm rooting for Miami in that one... I just don't think they can do it.

I tried to pick the NFL games I thought would be the best games, but again, there aren't many. The plus side here is that both Monday Night games should be interesting. I may be giving Oakland way more credit than they deserve, we'll have to wait and see.

I was working on the cover for the 'Clinical Assassin' print version (28 pgs) this morning when I accidentally spilt water on it... (insert sad face here)

It wasn't a lot and the pencils aren't ruined so I may be able to fix it once I get it inked and scanned onto my computer.

Sarah Palin Can Talk Smack...

...but can she be Vice President?

I'm anxious to see what the national reaction to Palin's convention speech will be. Most of the experts I've read or heard say "wait a week or two." The Gallop Daily Tracking Poll is usually (and ironically) a day or so behind so we can't look at that yet.

I was reading a lot of comments on several news sites after the speech and it looked like about a 65-35 split with more people having a negative opinion of Palin. I'm not that surprised by that considering she didn't really tell us where she stands on anything as much as she insulted and mocked the Democratic Ticket.

It's odd the GOP would go so far out of their way to slam the "East Coast Liberal Media" when that same media gave Palin such glowing reviews including the phrase "a star is born" being uttered in almost perfect unison immediately after the speech ended.

O'Reilly Is An Idiot And Here Is Why

Last night on the O'Reilly Factor, Bill denied that Sarah Palin ever said she didn't know what the Vice President does... but if you watch the video in my last entry you can clearly see she did say it.

Vice President Sarah Palin?

McCain's Vice Presidential Candidate, Sarah Palin, doesn't know what the Vice President does. I'm not making that up. When you watch the video above, at the 2:50 mark (that's 2 minutes 50 seconds) after being asked about the possibility of being McCain's running mate she says "... but as for that VP talk all the time, I tell ya' I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me 'What is it exactly that the Vee Pee does every day?'..."

Could you have possibly made a worse choice? The only smart thing the McCain camp has done was make the announcement today to disrupt the Obama coverage.

Who Really Cares>

I don't know why people get excited about the Clintons. They've done as much to hurt the Democratic Party in the last few months as the Republicans and everybody is treating the DNC like it's their show. Maybe after Bill Clinton gives his speech Wednesday night they'll stay out of the spotlight at least until after the election.

The Force Unleashed

I played the Force Unleashed demo on the PS3 and loved it. Once you get comfortable with the controls it's a lot of fun. Throwing a crate into the path of a TIE Fighter is pretty easy but entertaining.

The only thing I didn't like was the cinematic scene. It looks like it belongs somewhere between the PS2 and the PS3.

I don't know if the guy that plays the main character did the voice or not (just assuming he did) but whoever did it did a good job and the dialogue made the scene interesting.

Clinical Assassin

I just got the final pages of Clinical Assassin from J.C. and they look amazing. Anybody that's followed the story and enjoyed the art so far will love the artwork in the final chapter.

Now to get these pages lettered... stay tuned.

Update

I just wanted to clarify any confusion over today's Untelevised strip. I'm rerunning yesterday's strip since the site was down yesterday. So if you happened to catch the score of the Yankees' inhumane loss to the Red Sox yesterday, that's why it doesn't match today's comic.

Untelevised Is... Untelevised

WebcomicsNation.com is down right now. I'm not sure what's going on but as long as it's down I can't update 'Untelevised' so if anybody came here looking for information that's what happened. I have no idea when it'll be back up again but as soon as it is I'll update the comic as quick as possible.

Savage Runs His Mouth Again

Today's update for Untelevised is about Michael Savage and the comments he made the other day about Autistic Children (something about their parents using it as an excuse instead of telling their children to "stfu")

There was some stuff on the news about people protesting and promising to boycot his advertisers. I don't know what difference it would make, most of his listeners agree with him... that's kinda why they listen to him in the first place.

It's hardly the first time he's said something this stupid before either. Almost every night he says something rude and offensive about whatever large group of people he happens to be talking about that day.

The good news is he's old...
Have A Nice Day.

The New Yorker Fails

Today's installment of Untelevised depicts the Editor of the New Yorker, David Remnick, as a memeber of the KKK. Not because I think he's a racist, but because I think he's a fucking idiot. It's intentionally baseless and untrue... just like this week's cover illistration of 'The New Yorker'

The New Yorker is supposedly a pro-Obama magazine, but if you've seen the cover of this week's issue it's pretty much the exact opposite. It's the one with the "satirical caricature" of Mr & Mrs Obama as an Islamic terrorist and black militant giving each other a "terrorist fist jab" in the Oval Office with a painting of Bin Laden hanging over the fireplace where an American flag is burning... I swear I'm not making this shit up.

The picture is supposed to put a spin on the lies spread about Obama on the internets. The article inside the magazine, the one nobody is gonna read, sheds some light on those lies and the fact that they are lies but like I said... nobody is gonna read it.

What people will do is see the cover sitting on the magazine rack staring back at them depicting that black guy they're still not sure about as a fucking terrorist.

Do I think they did it on purpose to scare people? No. Did they do it to sell magazines? Yes. Are they fucking idiots that had no idea they were fucking idiots? YES.

Oasis and Jay-Z

I thought this was funny even though I take Noel's side. Jay-Z was taking a shot at Noel Gallagher for saying he shouldn't be playing at Glastonbury because it's a Rock festival.

The only problem is that Glastonbury is in England... which as you'll see a little bit into the video has a big Oasis fan base.

He let it play too long and by the second verse he was mumbling all the parts he didn't know. At that point he starts playng to the crowd encouraging them to sing along... because he's not stupid.

'Attack of the Show' played a clip of the video in their "Epic Fail" segment last night, but keep in mind this is the show that thinks calling anybody that's not a fucking nerd a douche is cool.

I don't think this is that big of a deal either. Jay-Z has some good points about respecting all forms of music but at the same time he missunderstood what Noel was saying about Glastonbury specifically. I don't agree with Noel's opinion of hip-hop, but I do agree that a bunch of hippies at a rock festival aren't that interested in artists like Jay-Z and Amy Whinehouse or w/e her name is, who punched a fan at the show probably because nobody (Oasis fans or Jay-Z fans) wants to hear that shit.

Untelevised Hits 10000

Untelevised reached 10,000 pageviews yesterday. It's been my most successful webcomic so far. Shan and Shanny is still ahead of it with about 16300 pageviews but that series is almost 2 years old now (Untelevised is less than 2 months old)

I've been wanting to make some t-shirt designs based on the series so hopefully I can do that sometime next week. If anybody has any requests let me know. (email: ShanBruceLee@yahoo.com)

I'm sure everybody knows by now that Tim Russert died Friday of a heart attack. I did the portrait sketch with a #2 pencil on ordinary typing paper and added the background later.

Obama Sketch From 'Untelevised' Series

This is the latest installment of Untelevised that went live this morning. I did it last night while I was listening to him give his victory speech after passing the delegate mark to become the Democratic Nominee for President!

It's probably one of the best sketch portraits I've ever done, so the fact that it only took a few hours to go from a blank piece of paper to this finished strip is pretty damn good for me. It's a good sign that my art skills are improving.

I probably won't be doing any sketches like this for a while, but it was fun to do and hopefully I'll get a chance to do some more. For now I'm sticking to caricatures and stick figure politicians.

'Shan and Shanny' Put On Hold

I've been really busy lately with Untelevised and the print version of Clinical Assassin and as a result I haven't been able to do anything with the Shan and Shanny series.

It's not that I've completely neglected the series, it's just that... well I've pretty much completely neglected it. But I do plan on eventually doing some more pages for the series. I have a lot of fun stuff floating around in the back of my head that I had planned on doing eventually, but at this point I'd rather focus on my more serious and, honestly, more important work.

Alien Show Gets New Blood

This is the newest character on the Alien Show. It's the first female character too. I've got about 4-5 new characters I've penciled and inked a template for but I haven't scanned them into my computer yet. Hopefully I can do that soon and get them into the rotation.

Countdown Segment

I wish I had something other than political videos to post lately but for the time being I don't. Fortunately, this sh*t is hilarious. Not really, but it would be if it wasn't so true. The best part is the very end when he tells Bush to "Shut. The. HELL. up!"

Off and Running

I'm just 3 days in now and Untelevised is off to a great start. Of the four webcomics I've done, 'Untelevised' has had the best 1st and 2nd day and the 3rd looks like it could be even better (it's 4:00am as I'm writing this)

It was my second highest comic yesterday (based on page views) which is pretty impressive considering the comic consists of one page and a title page. It even gave Clinical Assassin a run for it's money. (Just to put that in perspective, 'Clinical Assassin' is by far my highest ranking comic - It nearly doubles the total page hits for my other two comics on Saturdays, the day I update it)

Let's hope this holds. Like I said in this article yesterday, I've already got the first 10 strips ready to be uploaded so I've got a good head start. By the time I reach that 10th strip I should have a good idea of how well the comic is gonna be recieved.

I'll be sure to update again around that time.
